Frameless Television

Industrial design can transform a piece of electronics from something that is purely functional to something that is beautiful. The panel of U.S. Judges believe that Sharp has accomplished such a thing with their IGZO frameless concept TV. It brings the picture all the way to the edges of the screen in a design that is both functional and appealing to the eyes.
It is well known that U.S. Consumers are increasingly choosing between TVs based on the size of their bezel. The smaller the frame is around a TV screen, the more desirable it is to have in a living room. We are seeing similar concepts being applied to smartphones. A screen that stretches all the way to the edges is seen as cutting edge, sleek and there is no wasted space on a non functional area. For this reason frameless design is immediately desirable in the marketplace.
Although Sharp isn't necessarily going to introduce this model for consumers it shows the power of innovation and how pushing the limits of industrial design can make a commercial product living room worthy. It also opens up many different scenarios where screens can be grouped together for unique display environments. A screen this beautiful can be useful in business applications and in retail signage. We hope this frameless technology will continue to improve and the price will get to a place where it may someday find its way into many homes.
We also like how Sharp continues to make good use of its IGZO display technology. Not only can the display be thinner and clearer than other display types, it also does a good job at power management. This means a screen can exhibit excellent display qualities while keeping energy costs to a minimum. Due to increasing energy costs this is a valuable consideration.
This was a very competitive category because the frameless TV was up against not only another very compelling TV design from Sharp but also a tablet that made good use of hard to incorporate materials in a form factor we have yet to see. We went with the frameless concept because it is something we would like to see developed further and introduced into the U.S. market.
Sharp caught the attention of many eyes with its frameless TV at CEATEC and we proudly believe it deserves this award.
