NEC Portable DNA AnalyzerThe NEC Portable DNA Analyzer is a mobile DNA Analysis lab that has been designed with the intent of providing a DNA analysis and a potential match within 30mn.
Today, many DNA analysis systems are designed to process multiple DNA samples at a slow rate (waiting for two days is common). This DNA analyzer is designed to do the contrary: process one DNA sample in 30mn.
This method can be extremely useful in situations when a short delay is desired, whether because the situation is urgent, or simply for convenience. For example, police work would benefit from a fast DNA result because law enforcement needs to move very fast within the first 48 hours window. A DNA match could be of tremendous help in a situation where a suspect may have time to flee.
A medical situation could be more common: sometime it is necessary to perform a DNA analysis to know if a patient should receive a specific type of antibiotic. A sick person would rather want to know now right away, instead of having to wait for a couple of days before getting the results. A quick DNA analysis could prove even more beneficial if the medical staff needs to test successive samples for a single case.
Thanks to the NEC Portable DNA analyzer, it will be easier for law enforcement, researchers and medical staff to iterate faster, and be more productive in their work instead of waiting for the results. Since the system is less expensive than bigger solutions, we also hope that a greater access to DNA analysis by the scientific community will lead to new breakthroughs.
