We take photos every day to share information with ourselves and others. The "photo record" of what we need to remember is convenient; a simple and quick method for recalling that information we need at a later time. How often does one look at something and ask "What is that?" or see something they'd like more information about, but aren't sure what to ask? In the age of petabytes of instantly accessible data from search engines, crowd-sourced, and social network data providers, it makes sense to combine the everyday photo with image recognition and data matching. Sony's Info-eye does just that – taking the simple process of taking a photo and expanding it to greatly enhance a consumer's access to related information. It brings to life the adage "A picture is worth a thousand words."
Sony illustrated this with a real-world example: taking a photo of a bottle of wine. Within seconds, Info-eye surfaced information cards, hovering over the image. Recipes using that type of wine, purchase locations, related search items – all instantly returned and immediately useful. When you combine all of the available, and often free, data services on the Internet – something we don't often think about yet utilize constantly – we achieve the power to expand our knowledge about anything, practically by simply looking at it through the eyes of our smartphone's lens.
