The combination of Sharp's IGZO and Qualcomm's MEMS technologies into a single seven-inch LCD delivers on a promise for high-speed switching and the potential for integrating components on display glass. In just short of two years, Sharp and Qualcomm have merged the best attributes of the two technologies into a single LCD that potentially provides a new means for displaying data in industrial applications, including airplane cockpits. Qualcomm's PerfectLight MEMS digital micro shutter modulates light from a red, green and blue LED backlight and employs high-speed switching, making it an ideal candidate for delivering full-motion video with 24-bit color depth and a 170-degree viewing angle. Sharp's IGZO technology offers the potential for lower costs in replacing amorphous silicon in LCDs, and has high electron mobility that can be used to reduce device size, increase aperture ratio and allow for the integration of components on glass. The merging of the technologies potentially signals a new option in small screen displays, which is why we chose the seven-inch LCD as the winner of the 2013 CEATEC Innovations award in the components category.
