Internet, smart phone, cell phone, and cloud services provide a very fundamental ICT infrastructure for our daily life. Very timing-critical businesses, such as stock market, heavily depend on ICT infrastructure. Thus, how ICT infrastructure can be provided to users quickly, reliably and safely are important aspects as a national infrastructure. Recently, to solve those problems, Software-defined network (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) are regarded as one of promising key enabling technologies in carrier network, cloud and datacenter area. For server and storage area, virtualization technologies are predominantly being used, and several automation technologies are being used to provide a flexible IT infrastructure. Network area, however, still has a limitation of infrastructure management, since conventional network equipment are designed as specialized hardware and since its design, provisioning, and operation are handled by special supports of engineers, compared with IT technologies. Thus, creating virtualization technologies for network infrastructure are expected to achieve this goal. This symposium discusses latest technology trend of network virtualization technologies of SDN and NFV from carriers and vendors point of view. Also, technical issues of SDN and NFV platform design and their solutions are discussed, and then how carriers and vendors will have a global competence in commercialization of these technologies are further discussed to pursue the next generation infrastructure. Part 1 of this symposium covers carriers and vendors activities about network virtualization technologies using SDN and NFV. Key executives in this field are invited to talk about research and development activities of SDN and NFV and its commercialization issues. Part 2 of this symposium covers academia's activities about network virtualization technologies using SDN and NFV. Then, the panel discussions will discuss expectations of users, carriers, and vendors toward next generation infrastructure utilizing SDN and NFV.
