In the not-too-distant future, driverless cars will be able to whisk us from place to place in the middle of the night without requiring a single headlight.
But, until then, we human beings must still control the car, and we still need to see where we're going at night. High-and low-beam headlights have been the solution since the dawn of motoring, enabling a driver to see well.
But, when, another car is around they become ineffective. If left on, they blind other drivers.
When turned off, it becomes more difficult to see your surroundings.
Mazda and Stanley showed off an interesting yet simple solution, an LED array that can prevent other drivers from being blinded while still lighting up your surroundings. Individual LEDs means that sections of the headlight's beam can be dimmed. Using a camera, the system can detect the location of other cars and selectively dim just those portions that would be bothersome to those drivers.
This reduces distractions for all drivers while also improving vision.
For creating a simple solution that will greatly improve the lives of drivers, we award the Transportation award to Mazda for its Adaptive LED Headlights.
