Future mobile devices will come in all shapes and sizes, but increasingly they're getting smaller and smaller. This creates anumber of problems, including less room for discrete components and a greater need for new means of interaction.
With the Sensor Network Module, Alps has addressed both problems in a single chip. Integrating both communications and motion interaction, the Sensor Network Module will make future wearable devices smaller, more power efficient, and easier to use. This opens the door for innovative designs, like the 16Lab concept ring that was shown here at CEATEC JAPAN 2014.
Additionally, the inclusion of motion-sensing functionality enables such devices to have high-precision and innovative means of interaction.
This is important with devices as small as a ring or smart watch, which have no room for large touch screens or physical controls. Indeed, we expect such devices to be incredibly commonplace over the next two years, and many will rely on gesture functionality to be usable.
For these reasons and more, we award the Electronic Component award to the Alps Electric Sensor Network Module.
