Innovations for the digital future
i.e. both in the field of state-of-the-art communications systems and in the field of digital media and services use, are at the heart of research and development work carried out by the Heinrich-Hertz-Institut. We are concentrated to develop the principles of information technology and to demonstrate new applications for new products in partnership with the industry. Main topics are further video- and audio-coding,transmission (Video over IP) the 2D- und 3D image processing, the image reproduction in virtual environments, teleimmersive systems, autostereoscopic displays, miixed reality displays, man-machine-interactions and information and videoretrieval.

Interactive Window Shopping / 3D Books
We make future shopping trips a special experience by enabling passers-by to operate with hand and facial gestures. for selecting and purchasing goods - even after the shop has closed.
The Interactive 3D-Book-Explorer makes it possible to generate digital 3D-Books and present them so that readers can interact with them naturally. Virtual access is given to these books as well as to mail order catalogues, and newspapers.
Benefits: hygienic interaction & clean windows, adjustable to any display, easy set-up and maintenance, innovative product presentation & selling, 24h / 7days experience.

HEVC - Software and Hardware Solutions
HEVC 4K Real-time Decoder
The resource efficient, multi-threaded architecture of Fraunhofer HHI's HEVC software decoder enables real-time decoding of 4K 60Hz UHD video and suits perfectly the ever-growing need for high-resolution video in applications ranging from very low bit-rate video conferencing over mobile web streaming to high-quality TV broadcasting.
HEVC Real-time Software Encoder
The latest real-time software encoder is able to encode 1080p HD video in real-time and stream it to Windows, Linux and Mac OS X clients.
HEVC Real-time Hardware Decoder
The H.265 / MPEG-HEVC ultra low delay decoder IP core is completely hardware based, and supports the HEVC main profile. Even without an additional processor core the decoding providing real-time performance for full HD resolution (1080p30) at a clock frequency below 150 MHz. The design is currently implemented on an Altera Stratix-V FPGA.
HEVC Bitstream Test Suite
The HHI HEVC bitstream test suite is a set of specially crafted coded video sequences that can be used to test conformance of HEVC decoders. Each of these bitstreams has specific characteristics that test the functionality of all individual components of an HEVC decoder and their interactions. A reference decoder is shipped with the test suite that can be used to verify the decoding results.

Broadband Optical Wireless Communication
With its Visible Light Communication Fraunhofer HHI presents a novel form of broadband transmission technology. Broadband data streams travel in the visible light from standard off-the-shelf LED lights to the computer or communication- enabled end device.
The newly developed patent protected components have now enabled exploitation of a much higher bandwidth of up to 180 MHz and achieved a transmission rate in laboratory experiments of over 1 Gbit/s per single light frequency. As off-the-shelf white light LEDs mainly use three light frequencies or light colors (RGB), speeds of up to 3 Gbit/s are feasible.
