Shiga Prefecture is located nearly in the center of the Japanese islands.In the center sits Lake Biwa,which is among the oldest lakes in the world,ranking with Lake Bikal and Lake Tanganyika,and the biggest in Japan.
Shiga has a well-developed traffic network surrounding Lake Biwa and holds an important position for surface traffic as a junction of three economic zones in Japan:Kinki(Osaka and Kyoto),Chukyo(Nagoya)and Hokuriku.
