Onsen, a term for hot springs in Japanese, has been viewed to have therapeutically effects on arthritis, neuralgia, dermatitis, etc. Beppu is a famous hot spring resort, and the number of wells and the yield of hot water is the largest in Japan. Saravio Cosmetic Ltd. was established in Beppu. We therefore believed that our social action program is a provision of the beauty care products on human health that are developed by the resolution of Onsen’s functions. As the results of research on fango, therapeutic hot spring mud, we isolated a microalga, Onsen Alga, which has anti‐inflammatory activity. Metabolic syndrome has a possibility of an onset of the lifestyle-related diseases, diabetes, hypertension, etc. It has shown in the over-weight adults that the intake of Onsen Alga dry powder decreases the blood sugar level, blood pressure, and waist circumference, suggesting the effect of anti-metabolic syndrome. Onsen Alga will be useful in broader markets of foods, cosmetics and so on.
