Company Introduction

ROHM was established in 1958 as a manufacturer of electronic and semiconductor components. ROHM proposes solutions for system optimization and develops a stable supply of high quality, high reliability LSIs and discretes by utilizing integrated quality management, from raw materials to assembly, based on a quality-first initiative established since the company was founded. ROHM also contributes to greater functionality and miniaturization by strengthening the development, production, and sales of new products and technologies designed to bring added value and meet future market needs.
In the IoT field a range of modules and evaluation kits are offered that make it easy to build sensor networks by utilizing ROHM's wide variety of sensor products and wireless communication technologies. And in recent years ROHM aims towards further growth in the industrial and automotive sectors that demand higher quality and reliability by leveraging superior analog expertise cultivated over many years.

Sensor Shield (ROHM Sensor Evaluation Kit)

ROHM offers sensor shields that support open platforms such as Arduino Uno, Lazurite, and mbed and enable easy evaluation of 8 onboard sensors (accelerometer, barometric pressure sensor, geomagnetic sensor, ambient light sensor, color sensor, Hall IC, UV sensor, and optical heart rate monitor). In addition, ROHM is currently developing 5 new sensor kits (i.e. gyroscope, 6-axis combo sensor) that can be added on to expand applicability.
In recent years, an increasing number of companies are pursuing efforts into new markets following the expansion of IoT into fields such as infrastructure, agriculture, and automotive. However, constructing IoT systems entails a wide range of expertise and significant development load involving both hardware and software. In addition, due to the different development and mounting environments for IoT devices evaluation can prove to be problematic.
In response to customer demands for a tool that can quickly and easily evaluate sensor devices, ROHM developed an evaluation board compatible with open-source platforms that integrates multiple sensors. Simply connect the board to an Arduino Uno to receive sensor data (via software). This makes it easy to evaluate and prototype ROHM sensors, significantly reducing development load while contributing to expansion of the IoT market.
ROHM also provides a comprehensive support system, including materials and software required for using the sensor shield which can be downloaded from ROHM's sensor shield page: www.rohm.co.jp/web/japan/sensor-shield-support.

Sub-GHz RF Module Compatible with Wi-SUN

ROHM has developed a USB dongle (BP35C2) and compact general-use module (BP24C0) compatible with the Wi-SUN (Wireless Smart Utility Network) international wireless communication standard ideal for building smart communities that utilize IoT and smart meters. METI (the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry) is increasingly promoting the adoption of smart meters in homes, with the goal of achieving a smart meter utilization rate of 100% in all households and offices by the early 2020's in order to improve power supply efficiency.
At the same time many power companies have begun to adopt Wi-SUN, which features low power consumption and excellent communication range, in networks comprised of smart meters, and the number of home networks utilizing Wi-SUN compatible devices is increasing.
The BP35C0 is a compact surface-mount Wi-SUN module (utilizing external antenna) equipped with LAPIS Semiconductor's ML7416N wireless communication IC with large memory capacity and wireless communication functions that provide class-leading reception sensitivity. Additional features include certification under Japan's Radio Law, MCU with built-in Wi-SUN firmware, and an industry-small 15mmx19mm form factor, making it ideal for small devices such as HEMS controllers and home appliances utilizing Wi-SUN.
ROHM also offers the BP35C0 Radio Law certified USB dongle with integrated BP35C0 module that makes it easy to add Wi-SUN functionality by simply connecting to existing home gateways. Going forward ROHM will continue to develop products for smart communities and the IoT market.

Nano Energy® Synchronous Buck Converter

The growing number of wearable devices being produced, which is expected to exceed 200 million units by 2020, is driving the demand for further miniaturization and longer life. However, problems related to noise sensitivity, response speed, and element current leakage have hampered efforts to achieve a power supply IC featuring low power consumption.
In response, ROHM developed a proprietary technology, dubbed Nano Energy(R), that delivers ultra-low quiescent current.
This makes it possible to achieve 90% efficiency at a load current of 10uA, significantly reducing standby loss and enabling continuous operation for up to 10 years on a single coin battery. As a result, Nano Energy(R) is expected to contribute to greater miniaturization and longer battery life in wearables, HEMS equipment, and small power generating devices.
