In the past year, 4K TV sets have moved from speculation to a major force. The number of models available at retail has grown enormously and prices are falling rapidly. But how quickly will consumers adopt 4K sets and how low will prices go in the future? Is better picture quality the only driving force, or are other factors at play? How will 4K TV adoption vary by region?
And what is the outlook for content in 4K? How will consumers be able to view 4K content on their new 4K display? What will be the role for broadcast and disc in the light of broadband operators such as Netflix launching streamed 4K content? Will the relative lack of native 4K content availability in the home severely restrict sales of sets?
Meanwhile the recent downturn in demand for TVs in Western Europe, Japan and North America is now beginning to flatten as a major replacement cycle begins to drive volumes, especially for larger screen TV’s. The role of ‘Smart’ TV’s is being questioned within the myriad of options available to consumers for accessing OTT Content including Set-Top-Boxes, Digital Media Adaptors, Games Consoles, and BD players. And the role of secondary TV’s is being threatened by Tablets & Smartphones. Futuresource will present its view on how these factors will impact the TV market.

Lord Sebastian Coe stated that “running an Olympic Games is the largest logistical challenge a country can face outside of a war” and this was certainly true for London in 2012 and it is quite likely that the same thing will apply for Tokyo in 2020. By the time that a country has won the honor of hosting the Games and then putting together their local xOCOG, there is generally only 6 years of planning to put together a perfect 6 weeks of the Games.
However, for planning purposes, the technology design needs to be solidified approximately 2 years prior to the start of the Games in order to allow for getting it fully operational and stable. Additionally, there are typically competitions within many of the Olympic venues as much as 1 year in advance, where the technology and venue has to be completely built up and ready to go. Therefore, there is really only a window of 4 years to get the technology roadmap through critical design and service design reviews, with the added complication of trying to predict the future of where technology is going.
For London, one huge change occurred that no one had predicted, and that was the introduction of the iPhone in July 2007 which completely changed the mobile landscape from mostly voice traffic to almost completely data traffic at tremendously higher volumes. The key to BT’s success on the telecommunications infrastructure architecture was an initial decision to overprovision by significant amounts as well as to have 2-4x redundancy in all parts of the system. Thus, when BT had to implement the world’s largest high density WiFi network, the basic foundation was already in place to fully support it.

Demand for Smartglasses and Smartwatches currently remains limited to the most enthusiastic of early CE adopters, while across other categories the Wearable technology market is already shipping in 10’s of millions of units, and worth over $6 billion (at trade, in 2013.
The wearable technology market is a new growth area for the consumer electronics industry with established CE vendors and new start-ups entering the space. Wearable technology is driven by factors other than the technical features and capabilities.
In this presentation Futuresource will provide some insight in to the following:
• What devices and applications will reach mass market penetration?
• What is the total market opportunity and how does it compare to established CE markets?
• How are consumers using these devices now and how might it evolve?
• Which companies are currently enjoying the spoils in this nascent market?
• Which companies from the world of technology, apparel, software, healthcare, etc. will shape this market moving forward?
• What differences exist between developed and emerging markets?
• What wireless technologies are likely to be most relevant in this market?

Due to the appearance of the Internet of things (IoT), it is expected that the number of devices connected to internet will increase several times more in a couple of years from now. Manufacturing companies have planned, developed, produced and sold products till now. However, any individual can become a manufacturing company using a cloud service for planning, producing and selling. So, security threats of IoT at present and the IoT security in the future become a consideration.
