WallSHOP: Smartphone-interlocked digital signage for shoppingRakuten is the largest online eCommerce site in Japan, akin to Amazon’s same foothold in the United States. Their WallShop solution, a plug-in free, device agnostic, smart wall solution, enables consumers to use any smart device to uniquely navigate and interact with their expansive catalog. From a consumer’s perspective, it just works. Scan a QR Code, and instantly interact with the catalog. From a software engineer’s perspective, what they’ve done is truly exceptional. Using practically any modern smartphone or tablet, a consumer can product information using a touch friendly interface. No plug-ins are necessary – still a rare treat these days – making the solution instantly compatible with millions of devices with minimal support headaches. They’ve provided multi-device responses via industry standards HTML5, WebSockets, and open source software libraries. All interaction is performed through the consumer’s phone, reflected almost instantly on the wall. This by itself is incredible, given the slow, congested network on which I tested. The solution is even intelligent enough to detect the device’s language settings and automatically translate product listings for the individual user. Kudos to Rakuten for providing both a well-designed user experience and ensuring consumer access through innovative use of standards-based technologies.
