MAZDA PROACTIVE SAFETY
At Mazda Motor Corp. we believe that the joy of driving is linked to safety and peace of mind behind the wheel, as well as minimizing the risk of an accident – so in the driving environment, Mazda supports anything that helps the driver be more aware of the situation, make better decisions and maintain better control of their automobile. This is why Mazda has developed MAZDA PROACTIVE SAFETY – safety technology that was researched and developed with an emphasis on understanding, trusting and respecting the human driver.
From the concept of MAZDA PROACTIVE SAFETY was born i-ACTIVSENSE and the HEADS-UP COCKPIT, an initiative to encourage proper posture when behind the wheel – both innovations to support the driver.

Cars that can support driving safety by detecting danger – i-ACTIVSENSE
i-ACTIVSENSE is the name we give to the in-car technology that actively senses dangerous situations, allowing the driver the space and time to avoid a potential problem. Sensors are fitted all over the car, including the so-called blind spot in the rear-view mirror and when danger is detected an alarm sounds. The system can also detect driver error, supporting the safe operation of the automobile and contributing to reducing the number of accidents.
HEADS-UP COCKPIT Concept
Mazda has developed a heads-up cockpit designed to collect, collate and present data to the driver at the appropriate time so that they can control the automobile in the best possible position and posture to ensure safe driving. It is very important to always be in the ideal driving position to ensure full concentration on driving – and in order for the driver to have ample time to avoid dangerous situations.
Turn the car engine on and the meter hood display pops up – the Active Driving Display only shows what the driver needs to know – speed, navigation and route information. This is displayed roughly 1.5m in front of where the driver is sitting, which means it is right in his/her eyeline and the driver has to do very little to view this information in terms of adjusting their focus from what is happening on the road.
The Center Display is designed so that the driver does not have to look down too far to see the information they need. Human engineering knowledge forms the basis for the choice of items displayed, the font size and the spacing between the information shown.
Just under where the left hand sits on the steering wheel the driver can make adjustments to the Commander Controls without ever relinquishing control of the wheel or taking his/her eyes off the road. These controls are simple and easy to use. Functions are switched and altered at the push of a button.
New Generation Mazda 4WD – i-ACTIV AWD
Madza’s All Wheel Drive (AWD) is an on-demand power system for 4WD that delivers power as and when it is needed to the rear wheels. This 4WD system has two main aims – to cover distance efficiently and to conserve fuel consumption.
A variety of sensors collect data pertaining to the automobile and the road surface conditions, and based on the driver’s needs and requirements, the system will make predictions, such as diverting more power to the rear wheels to prevent slippage on the front tires. The Control Module is constantly making these instantaneous calculations and decisions. Essentially, the system makes real-time decisions and sends instructions to the 4WD coupling unit, enabling advanced control of the power distribution to each wheel. On dry surfaces, where wheel slip is less likely, little or no power is diverted to the rear wheels and the car basically functions as a 2WD vehicle – and this contributes to improved fuel economy. i-ACTIV AWD refers to intellectually active control over the vehicle’s drive system.
